MDDUS comments on new GMC report: The state of medical education and practice in the UK
Author: MDDUS | Date: 21 November 2025
At a glance:
- MDDUS says international medical graduates (IMGs) are vital to the NHS but often feel uncertain about their place in the system.
- IMGs report bias, unclear expectations and limited support, which MDDUS says reflects system shortcomings rather than individual ability.
- The organisation is calling for better induction, supervision and wellbeing support, warning the NHS cannot afford to lose IMG doctors.
Commenting on the GMC’s The State of Medical Education and Practice in the UK report, Dr Naeem Nazem, Head of Medical at MDDUS said:
“International medical graduates (IMGs) play a key role in keeping the NHS running, meaning these new figures from the GMC represent a shift that deserves attention.
“At MDDUS we hear directly from IMGs who feel unsure about their place in the NHS system. Many face bias, unclear expectations and limited support when they arrive. These pressures stem from system inadequacy rather than IMGs’ ability.
“Our own member insights and recent engagement with IMG leaders now informs our call for changes to see practical induction, consistent supervision and simple routes to support for wellbeing to become business as usual in the NHS.
“These are basic requirements, yet so often are missing in the IMG experience.
“The workforce plan for England must not create new barriers for IMGs. The NHS currently depends on them and cannot afford further loss. The system needs to back the IMG doctors it relies on.”
