MDDUS speaks out on Prime Minister’s plans to abolish NHS England
Author: MDDUS | Date: 14 March 2025
In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement that the government will abolish NHS England, Dr Naeem Nazem, Head of Medical at the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS), said:
“Abolishing NHS England is a bold step to take in the re-structuring of England’s healthcare system, but with so much at stake there are no easy options and upheaval is inevitable.
“Wherever control of the NHS in England sits, MDDUS’ goal remains the same: ensuring healthcare professionals are supported and can thrive in their jobs.
“Staff shortages, a burned-out workforce and increasing workloads must be addressed. There needs to be safeguarding in place to prevent the oncoming transition slowing the implementation of the new workforce plan, impacting vital services such as NHS Practitioner Health or in any way negatively affecting training recruitment pathways.
“There is also a need to ensure the loss of jobs within the NHS at a time of exceptional stress for the health service will not cause further decline in morale.
“MDDUS has stood by our members through many historic changes and re-structures of the health service. We’ll continue to advocate for them in an ever-changing landscape.”
