At a glance:

  • MDDUS has launched a dedicated newsroom to amplify the voices of doctors and dentists in debates shaping the future of healthcare.
  • The platform will publish insight and commentary on frontline experiences, emerging issues and clinician wellbeing, which MDDUS says is central to patient safety.
  • MDDUS aims to ensure healthcare policy and innovation are grounded in the realities of clinical practice by giving clinicians a space to be heard.

Our clinicians: the heroes of healthcare

As my time at MDDUS comes to a close, I have been struck by the dedication, hard work and sacrifice of our doctor and dentist members. I have also been struck by how few of their everyday experiences are understood. Too often, the people behind the profession are lost behind labels like specialty and seniority. While those labels can help highlight the issues they collectively face, they should not come at the expense of individual experiences and personal stories.

As many of our members know, doctors and dentists work in one of the most complex systems in modern life. Night and day, they make decisions that affect patients’ lives, often under intense pressure and scrutiny. Knowledge, judgement and empathy matter more than all the complex technical kit. At MDDUS we see that reality up close. We see their expertise and professionalism every day.

Who cares for clinicians?

But our members also come to us when things go wrong, when systems fail and when the pressures of modern healthcare begin to take their toll.

Their concerns are real. Their challenges matter. Not just to patients. But to policymakers, the media and the life science industries who seek to shape, explain and develop health services.

But are people really listening?

Introducing the MDDUS newsroom

Too often the authentic voices of doctors and dentists are missing from the conversations that shape the healthcare system around them.

Policy is debated. Regulation is elaborated. Technology advances. Yet the clinicians delivering care on the frontline are not heard in those discussions. Or their views are dismissed as special pleading from vested interests.

That is why, as I step down as CEO after more than a decade, we want to bring those stories to a wider audience. Today, we are launching the MDDUS newsroom to help people better understand the individuals behind the profession.

Our MDDUS microsite is a true first of its kind for our doctors and dentists, the MDDUS members of today and tomorrow. A hub for healing. A place to hear and be heard.

A forum for today’s doctors and tomorrow’s health issues

We will publish insight, commentary and analysis from across the MDDUS community and from clinicians who want to share their experience of modern practice.

You’ll hear about the ups and downs of professional lives, what’s making clinicians tick but also what’s getting them down.

We will also examine emerging questions for healthcare, from the role of artificial intelligence to new career patterns and structures.

There’ll be views on where politicians and regulators need to act – and where they need to keep their noses out.

Championing clinician wellbeing

And here’s one immediate priority.

Healthcare is a safety-critical profession. That’s why clinicians’ own wellbeing is essential.

This is a cause we champion here with pride, speaking up about real workplace issues that affect our members every day. Personal ones like burnout, stress, anxiety. Structural ones like violence, abuse and unmanageable expectations.

So, you’ll be hearing a lot about this uncomfortable subject on the site – and the possible solutions, not just the problem. Our expert report, “Wellbeing by Design,” discussed with MPs and MSPs set out a way forward. We’ll be holding them to account for their response.

Caring for doctors, caring for patients

Overall, our purpose is simple. To champion clinicians so they can consistently be their best.

To create a space where the experiences and expertise of doctors and dentists inform wider debate about the future of healthcare.

Healthcare policy works best when it is grounded in the realities of clinical practice.

By bringing those perspectives together in one place, we hope this platform will contribute to better conversations about how the system can support clinicians to do what they do best: care for patients.
